Fresh, Local Produce at Queens Road, Coventry

Last weekend, my search for healthy food in the Midlands continued and this time took me to Coventry. If I am honest, my knowledge of Coventry doesn't extend beyond Ikea and Primark; making my trip to Queen's Road Restaurant (based in The Ramada Hotel in Cov city centre) even more of a pleasant surprise.

The restaurant doesn't offer a specific gluten free menu- but since it centres around fresh, local produce, the chef was happy to recommend gluten free and dairy free dishes. What's more, the emphasis was definitely on naturally gluten free foods- making it one of the healthiest review meals I'd had in a long time (bar my large glass of wine but in my defence it was a Friday night) I started with a squash, parsnip and celeriac soup: both gluten free and vegan (with an option for regular or gluten free croutons)

This really was autumn in a bowl! A thicky creamy, surprisingly luxurious tasting soup (despite the absence of milk) which felt really hearty and warm. 10/10 for me! My husband indulged in the fishcake which also got top marks.

For the main, I was so excited to see that the restaurant offers 'Fresh Fish Friday'- I went for the special; grilled swordfish with yummy pomegranate and fennel with a side of root veg (see, I definitely deserved that wine!)

The dish was beautiful- and the pomegranate and fennel added a real zing. My husband went for the steak- which is also gluten free (aside from the onion rings; which are cooked and served separately; which meant I could 'share' his steak too- which I'm sure he was thrilled about)

We were too full for desert so settled for a Teapigs peppermint tea before heading home. I was really impressed with our trip to Queen's Road. On paper, it might seem unassuming- a standard hotel restaurant (which, in my past experience, I always find fairly bland and unoriginal- full of quick dishes targeted at businessmen) but it is a real venue in itself. With quirky decor, fresh cuisine and plenty of local, healthy ingredients- it's well worth a trip from Brum to try this one for yourself.

*Queen's Road provided a complimentary meal in return for our opinions-but the glowing review was all mine*
